A Mammogram Can Save Your Life

By the simple fact of having decided to start reading this article, you’ve already taken the first step towards prioritizing your breast health. Mammograms are considered one of the most effective screening tools used in the early detection of breast cancer, and when caught early, breast cancer may be easier to treat. Take your health into your own hands by making a screening mammogram part of your annual breast care routine.

Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Hispanic women and a leading cause of cancer death among this group in the U.S.? That's why today I'm joining Memorial Hermann’s campaign to raise awareness and give you a behind-the-scenes look of what a mammogram really is, from start to finish.

I still remember the first time my doctor told me that because of my age, I should schedule my first mammogram and how nervous I was with the fact I had to go to the hospital to get this exam. I would have loved to have more information and a behind-the-scenes look of what it really implied, which is why today I’m sharing my experience with all of you.

As soon as you arrive at a Memorial Hermann Breast Care Center, you’ll be greeted by the Patient Access Representative, she will guide you to the locker area where you will undress from the waist up and can leave your personal belongings. The great thing about Memorial Hermann is that instead of giving you the typical hospital gown, they give you a warm, spa-like white robe that makes you feel much more comfortable and less vulnerable while you wait.

A few minutes later, the mammogram technologist will come bring you back to the mammogram machine to perform the exam. All Memorial Hermann breast care locations have 3D machines which have more advanced technology that can take multiple images at the same time. This may help reduce the need for a follow-up visit.

They normally take two to three photos per breast. To obtain the photos, you will stand in front of the machine and the mammogram technologist will position you. Your breast will be compressed inside two plastic plates for a few seconds per photo. Some women are more sensitive to pressure than others, so it can feel a bit uncomfortable, but it goes very fast. At Memorial Hermann, you will find mammogram technologists that will communicate clearly and provide the respectful treatment we all deserve. Remember that it only takes a few unconformable seconds per photograph in exchange for peace of mind.

When the images are finalized, the mammogram technologist will guide you back to the dressing area so that you can get your things, change, and that's it! From start to finish you will be there for a little less than an hour, the process is very fast.

It’s important to follow recommended guidelines prior to your appointment such as not using deodorant, perfume, or lotions since they can interfere with the results. Don’t be afraid to ask questions; the staff is there to make you feel comfortable and to give you all the information you need.

The results of the mammogram are usually sent to your doctor, and they’ll give you the results about a week after your visit, if not sooner.

Let's take control of our own health and get a mammogram each year. Early prevention and detection are key to winning the battle against breast cancer.
